Why teach in Derby?

Derby is a beautiful, historic Roman city with a great selection of schools and colleges. There are 65 state funded schools in Derby, including 32 primary schools, 15 secondary schools, 7 specialist and alternative schools as well as a college. There are also 7 independently funded schools, 1 primary school, 4 secondary schools (including Derby Grammar School) and 2 specialist schools. The University of Derby is also based in the City of Derby.

Shopping and Leisure Facilities

Derby is a historic and beautiful city, known for its culture. There is a successful music and theatre scene, with a yearly open air concert at Darley Park, as well as one of the UK’s largest jazz scenes. The QUAD Centre opened in 2008 and is a hub for theatre and art as well as independent and arthouse cinema.

Sport is popular in Derby, with Derby County F.C. in the Championship, who play their home games at the Pride Park Stadium. There are also both Rugby League and Union teams that have a strong following.

Shopping is popular in Derby. There are 3 main shopping areas in the city; the Cathedral Quarter, St. Peter’s Quarter and Intu Derby. The Cathedral Quarter is based around Derby Cathedral and features high-end boutique shops, coffee shops and restaurants. St. Peter’s Quarter has more of an emphasis on local independent traders. Intu Derby is an inside shopping centre and features many of the usual high street classics.

Transport and Location

Derby has great transport links to the rest of the country. The M1 passes within a few miles, linking the city to London and the South. The A6 is also easily accessible, linking Derby to London, Carlisle, Manchester and Leicester.

Derby used to be the base of the headquarters of the Midlands Railway company, giving the city excellent railway links to the rest of the country, including a direct route to London’s St. Pancras Station.
