What are the benefits of being a Headteacher?

This may well be the highest position in the school. If you choose to become a headteacher you need to be prepared for hard work. However, this has many wonderful pay-offs.

  • Reap rewards for your success - In this type of role, hard work really pays off and a successful principle you will be recognised as so, if someone associated with a school is noted for outstanding success this has great benefits to the reputation of the school as well.

  • Make a significant impact - in a lower teaching role you can enjoy your positive impact on each child’s future. As a school principal, your impact affects the entire school from students and teachers all the way to parents.

  • Variety in each day - as the captain of the ship, you can expect each day to present new challenges. No two school days are the same in the busy life of the school principal, this is a great career if you are the type of person who feeds off of a highly stimulating role.

  • An increased salary - The average salary of a headteacher in the UK is £56,000, this varies greatly depending on what type of school you are working at, as well as the location. Academies pay the highest salaries for headteachers, earning from £62,000 a year.

Should you become a secondary Headteacher?

This type of role is best suited to people who know how to deal with stress and who take on varied, fast-paced working days with relative ease. If you are thinking of becoming a headteacher, consider if you have some of these skills to start with:

  • Long hours of work - headteachers are expected to attend many extra curricular events such as meetings and student activities. Headteachers generally attend training courses and professional development schemes during times when the rest fo the school are taking holiday time.

  • A diplomatic personality is required at times as you may be exposed to somewhat political situations with students, parents and teachers whilst having to remain professional.

  • High level of responsibility - if you are a naturally organised, confident and self aware person, this will be a great asset to deal with many issues that come into your hands as the decision-maker.

  • A positive attitude - if you are the type of person who takes negativity or hurdles in your stride you may be a natural headteacher. In this role you are guaranteed to come up against criticism no matter how hard you work. The important thing is to listen to your team, understand that sometimes failures are unavoidable, and learn from each experience.
