Deputy Head of Science Faculty job vacancy in Accrington, Permanent position

An Academy in Accrington is looking to recruit a Deputy Head of Department for Science. We are looking for a teacher who has strong subject knowledge, excellent classroom management skills and has the ability to deliver "good to outstanding" lessons to pupils in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The vacancy is offered on a permanent basis and will commence September 2018

About the Academy

It has an extremely successful learning environment that has seen student results improve significantly in recent years. Its recent building extension and refurbishment programme has added to the additional state of the art facilities for learning and will house a specialist provision for Sixth Form students. Cutting edge learning facilities are evident through the Academy, every classroom has an interactive white board and most classrooms are fully equipped with the "Active Expression" learning system.

It has a strong and fully supportive Senior Leadership Team who are dedicated to ensuring that the students receive the best learning experience.

The Role

As the successful candidate, your duties will include;

  • To oversee the teaching of Key Stage 3 & 4 Science and line manage the Science department.
  • To ensure that teachers are sufficiently resourced with key documents such as differentiated schemes of work, exam papers, exam board resources and end of topic tests.
  • To undertake quality assurance; book checks, lesson pop-ins, lesson observations and moderation of coursework.
  • To monitor student progress, collection of testing data to identify students who are under performing and implement strategies to support these students.
  • To liaise with the science technicians providing them with detailed information on the resource requirements for the academic year ahead for coursework and practical work.
  • To convene departmental meetings, ensuring minutes are distributed to staff within one week of the meeting taking place.
  • To implement a policy to deal with under-achieving students.
  • To facilitate additional interventions sessions as part of the departmental intervention strategy
  • Other reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Science Faculty or Leadership Group
  • To deputise for the Head of Science as appropriate

  • Be a qualified teacher with a recognised teaching qualification
  • Be able to deliver good to outstanding Geography lessons
  • Have a positive can do attitude with lots of enthusiasm
  • Have a drive to succeed
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to student achievement.
